SUMMARY:Books\, Knowledge and Attention: The Science of Reading
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to support teachers and school leaders in deepening their understanding of the Science of Reading and\, crucially\, in turning that research into classroom practice that is intentional\, coherent\, and effective. While awareness of the Science of Reading has grown rapidly\, many educators are still grappling with how to apply the research in ways that genuinely improve student understanding. This session bridges that gap\, connecting evidence to pedagogy and curriculum so that reading instruction leads to meaningful\, lasting learning. \nThe session will be delivered by Doug Lemov and the team from Teach Like a Champion\, drawing on decades of classroom observation\, instructional design\, and professional learning with schools across the United States and internationally. The focus is on what works in real classrooms and how great teachers consistently help students read with insight\, confidence\, and purpose. \nThe workshop concentrates on the phase of reading development that begins once students have mastered letter–sound correspondence\, roughly from Grades 3 through 12\, when the primary challenge shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. Participants will explore what research reveals about how students build meaning from complex texts\, develop deep comprehension\, and transfer understanding across subjects\, including English language arts\, history\, and science. \nFacilitators will guide participants through key research on the role of fluency\, background knowledge\, vocabulary\, attention\, and writing in reading comprehension. We’ll examine how these elements work together\, why comprehension cannot be taught as a generic skill\, and how strong curriculum design ensures that all student\, regardless of background\, can access and succeed with challenging texts. Particular attention will be given to designing effective close reading tasks that promote productive struggle and help students think more deeply and independently about what they read. \nThroughout the workshop\, participants will study video examples from real classrooms\, analyze lesson plans grounded in research\, and engage in structured discussion and reflection. The emphasis is firmly on practice – what this looks like in real classrooms\, how it fits within existing curricula\, and how teachers and leaders can make immediate\, high-impact changes to instruction. \nWho should attend? \nThis workshop is suitable for educators working with students in Grades 3–12\, including: \n\nElementary\, middle\, and high school teachers responsible for reading\, English language arts\, and content-area literacy\nLiteracy coaches and instructional specialists supporting curriculum design and classroom practice\nSchool and district leaders seeking a research-aligned approach to improving reading comprehension outcomes\nCurriculum leaders and coaches responsible for selecting\, adapting\, or implementing high-quality instructional materials\n\n  \nWhether you are strengthening classroom instruction or leading literacy improvement across a school or district\, this workshop provides a shared understanding\, practical strategies\, and common language to support better reading outcomes at scale. \nSchools will also have the option to purchase the Implementation Toolkit\, which includes a full set of workshop materials\, alongside additional planning tools and training resources to support sustained\, school-wide implementation. \nCost and location \nThe workshop is priced at $230 per person\, which includes lunch and refreshments on the day. Invoices are available upon request. \nGroup bundles are available for schools and districts purchasing three or more places\, a great option for teams looking to build shared understanding and align practice. To find out more about group pricing\, please contact our team. \nWe’re also offering an enhanced professional learning package. For $285 per person\, attendees will receive: \n\nFull access to this workshop with Doug Lemov\, and\nA ticket to Washington\, D.C. Festival of Education\, taking place on October 3\n\n  \nThis combined package offers exceptional value and the opportunity to further develop your teaching practice through exposure to a wide range of leading educators\, ideas\, and classroom-tested strategies. Group bundles also apply for this offer. \nPeople booking before the 31 March 2026 will get a 15% discount. \nLocation \nThe training will take place at The British International School of Washington\, the new home of the Washington\, D.C. Festival of Education. The school provides a professional\, inspiring setting for high-quality learning and collaboration\, right in the heart of the D.C. education community.

SUMMARY:New Year Reset: Not Another ‘New Year\, New You’ Overhaul
DESCRIPTION:Four live masterclasses to help you understand stress\, navigate difficult moments and treat yourself with greater kindness. \nMost of us recognise the importance of looking after our physical health\, but our mental health deserves the same care and attention. \nThis unique four-part webinar series with Owen O’Kane\, psychotherapist\, former NHS mental health clinical lead and Sunday Times bestselling author\, offers a practical\, honest and refreshingly straightforward approach to supporting your mental wellbeing. \nOwen is known for his warm\, direct and down-to-earth style. There is no jargon\, no judgement and no toxic positivity. Instead\, each session offers practical tools\, honest conversation and space to reflect on how you are really doing. \nAcross the four masterclasses\, Owen explores challenges many of us experience throughout the year\, from recognising stress and burnout to managing the pressures of Christmas\, navigating the January slump and quietening our inner critic. \nFour topics. One series. A chance to put yourself first. \nThe series begins on Wednesday 18 November during National Self-Care Week\, the perfect time to move your mental health and wellbeing higher up the agenda. \nFlexible booking options \nEach masterclass can be booked individually\, allowing you to choose the sessions that feel most relevant to you. An individual masterclass costs £50 plus VAT. \nIf you would like to attend more than one session\, the more you book\, the more you save: \n\nTwo sessions: 10% discount\nThree sessions: 15% discount\nFull four-session series: 20% discount\, plus a free copy of Owen’s bestselling book\, Addicted to Anxiety.\n\nWhether you attend one masterclass or the full series\, you will receive access to the recording. If you cannot join live\, you can download it and watch at a time that suits you\, or revisit the session afterwards. \nThe masterclass series at a glance \nEach session is a 75-minute live masterclass with Owen\, held over lunchtime from 12.30 to 13:45. It is an opportunity to step away from the working day and spend some time focusing on yourself. \nEvery masterclass combines Owen’s practical\, honest and jargon-free approach to mental health with: \n\nGuided self-reflection exercises\nA guided meditation\nA live Q&A\, giving you the opportunity to ask Owen your questions\nPractical ideas and tools you can continue using after the session\n\n  \nSession 1: Recognising Stress and Burnout: What Self-Care Actually Looks Like \n18 November at 12:30 \nOpening the series during National Self-Care Week\, this masterclass explores how to recognise the early warning signs of stress before they develop into burnout. \nOwen describes these signs as “fatigue signposting” — the physical\, emotional and behavioural signals we often overlook until we have run out of road. Using the image of an overwhelmed mind as a computer with too many windows open\, he offers a direct reminder that “martyrdom is highly overrated” and explores what meaningful\, sustainable self-care actually involves. \nKey takeaways \n\nRecognise the early signs of stress before they tip into burnout\nExplore Owen’s daily self-care needs list and identify what you may be missing\nLearn “Two to Zen”\, Owen’s two-minute emergency reset technique\nDevelop a shared language for the rest of the series\n\n  \nSession 2: Coping at Christmas: When You’re Not Feeling It but Everyone Else Seems to Be \n9 December at 12:30 \nChristmas often comes with an unspoken script: be cheerful\, relaxed and surrounded by loved ones. For many\, however\, it can bring anxiety\, difficult family dynamics and pressure to pretend everything is fine. \nThis masterclass explores the “ego mask” we wear when hiding how we really feel and reframes unhelpful habits as protective responses rather than personal failings. Owen offers practical ways to calm the threat response\, step out of anxiety loops and let go of comparisons with other people’s seemingly perfect Christmases. \nKey takeaways \n\nUnderstand anxiety as a habit loop rather than a personality flaw\nLearn Owen’s technique for calming the threat response\nGive yourself permission not to perform being fine\nRecognise why comparing your Christmas with others’ can make things harder\n\n  \nSession 3: New Year Reset: Not Another ‘New Year\, New You’ Overhaul \n13 January 2027 at 12:30 \nJanuary can bring pressure to change everything at once\, often when energy and motivation are at their lowest. This masterclass offers a more grounded alternative: beginning with an honest acceptance of where you are rather than chasing an unrealistic “new you”. \nDrawing on his established New Year Reset masterclass and ideas from Addicted to Anxiety\, Owen explains in plain language why the start of the year can feel so difficult. He introduces practical routines for building resilience\, soothing stress and moving forwards at a more manageable pace. \nKey takeaways \n\nUnderstand how stress works in clear\, everyday language\nLearn practical strategies for slowing down and doing less\nUse Owen’s pause–prioritise–proceed process on urgent or overwhelming days\nPractise a simple noticing exercise to support you through to March\n\nSession 4: Why We Love to Hate Ourselves \n10 March 2027 at 12:30 \nSelf-criticism can feel like the truth\, but it is often an old protective habit developed to keep us small\, safe and accepted. This masterclass offers a more compassionate way to understand your inner critic and recognise when its once well-intentioned voice is getting in your way. \nDrawing on Owen’s Seven Deadly Sins framework\, the session explores the different parts of ourselves that shape how we think and feel. Through practical reflection\, including Owen’s ‘dinner party’ exercise\, you will learn to give every part of yourself a seat at the table and develop a gentler\, more supportive inner voice. \nKey takeaways \n\nRecognise self-criticism as an old habit rather than the truth\nExplore Owen’s Seven Deadly Sins framework\nUse the ‘dinner party’ exercise to understand different parts of yourself\nDevelop a kinder internal voice to carry forwards\n\nReady to put your mental wellbeing first? \nChoose the masterclass that speaks to you or book the full series for the greatest value. Secure your place today and take a practical step towards feeling calmer\, more resilient and kinder to yourself.

SUMMARY:South West Inclusion and Belonging Summit
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date for EducationScape’s South West Inclusion and Belonging Summit \nFollowing the success of our previous summit\, don’t miss your opportunity to join us for this flagship event designed for school and college leaders\, educators\, support staff\, and apprenticeship providers. \nDesigned to help you translate inclusive vision into measurable impact\, this summit is closely aligned with current regulatory guidance. It focuses on meeting the needs of all learners and embedding a culture of true belonging across primary\, secondary\, post-16\, and apprenticeship provision. \nIt offers an opportunity to learn directly from practitioners\, specialists\, and national experts. You will gain evidence-informed\, practical insights that ensure your delivery across both classroom and workplace settings provides high-quality education\, strong personal development\, and positive outcomes for every learner. \n  \nWhy this summit matters now \nMeeting regulatory requirements and national guidance is vital\, but true impact goes far beyond compliance. Today’s providers must demonstrate how inclusion\, culture\, and learner wellbeing are embedded across every level of delivery. \nThis summit offers a dedicated space to reflect\, collaborate\, and address key challenges: \n\nDefining Belonging: What does a genuinely inclusive setting look like across classroom and work-based environments?\nDriving Outcomes: How do inclusive cultures systematically improve attendance\, behaviour\, and academic achievement?\nSustaining Engagement: How do we protect vulnerable learners during key transition points?\n\n  \nBy focusing on belonging as a driver of success\, this event supports you in creating spaces where all learners can build confidence\, stay engaged\, and achieve their full potential. \n  \nA joined-up conversation across education and training \nOne of the defining strengths of this summit is its cross-phase perspective. Inclusion does not reset when a learner moves between schools\, transitions to college\, or starts an apprenticeship\, and neither should our approach. \nThroughout the day\, you will hear from: \n\nSchool leaders and inclusion specialists\nCollege and post-16 practitioners\nApprenticeship providers and workplace learning specialists\nResearchers\, sector experts\, and national charities\n\nWith dedicated time for delegates to consider\, discuss\, and contribute\, together we will explore how consistent approaches to culture\, empathy\, and purpose can support learners across all key stages and post-16 provision\, particularly at critical transition points where vulnerability and disengagement are most likely. \n  \nWhat you’ll gain from attending \nDesigned to drive real change\, this practical\, thought-provoking event equips you to: \n\nGain clear\, evidence-informed strategies you can apply immediately\nDevelop a deeper understanding of how belonging underpins behaviour\, attendance and wellbeing\nStrengthen your confidence in responding to meeting broader regulatory and quality assurance expectations\nLearn how to better support disadvantaged learners and those with additional needs\nConnect with peers across primary\, secondary\, post-16\, and apprenticeship settings facing similar challenges.\n\n  \nYou will leave not only inspired\, but equipped with impactful tools\, language and strategies that can be shared across your teams. \n  \nA whole-community approach to inclusion \nA central theme of the summit is that belonging cannot be created by one role or department alone. Sessions will explore inclusion through a multi-faceted lens\, recognising the vital contribution of: \n\nEducators and leaders\nParents and carers\nLearners themselves\nCommunities\, employers and external partners.\n\n  \nWe will also dedicate time to examining the power of parental engagement\, particularly for learners navigating transition\, disadvantage or disengagement. \n  \nWhat to expect on the day \nThis event will focus on real-world insights from experts and providers\, with a particular focus the importance of positive transitions\, social mobility and current challenges. There will be multiple opportunities to ask questions\, as well as time to collaborate\, discuss and network with your peers. \nWe are currently finalising the full programme for the day. Chaired by FE Week Editor Shane Chowen\, the event already features several key sessions\, including: \n\nAn opening address from Marc Rowland\, Disadvantaged and Vulnerable Learners Adviser\, Unity Schools Partnership\nGuidance and direction from The Reach Foundation’s Regional Director for the South West\, Mohamed Abdallah\nAn update on current strategic direction from Emma Mills\, Head of Teaching and Learning Development\, Truro and Penwith College.\n\n  \nMore speakers will be announced over the coming weeks\, so watch this space for more information. \nThis is not just about understanding the problem\, it’s about acting on it. \n  \nWhat our previous attendees have said: \n‘Thank you for the opportunity to have time out at a great event.’ \n‘The Inclusion and Belonging summit was a seamless event\, with sector specialists openly sharing their experiences and successes.’ \n‘The summit provided timely insights that will directly inform our upcoming supported internship programme.’ \n‘ I now have a better understanding of the challenges across the different sectors in education and the good practice that is happening’ \n  \nDon’t miss out. save 20% with our early booking discount\, available until Friday 30 October 2026. \nGroup booking discounts are also available\, please email a member of the team for more information.
